An SDPI worker named Nizamuddeen was arrested on May 22nd for sexually harassing a 22-year-old co-passenger.

The incident took place on a KSRTC bus traveling the Kanhangad-Pathanamthitta route. Apparently, the lady warned him, after which the conductor asked him to change seats. However, he returned to the same seat after a while and began harassing her. At this point, the lady stood up and raised an alarm, following which the incident was reported to the police emergency number. Police subsequently arrested him when the bus reached Valanchery.

According to a news report by Marunadan Malayali, Nizamuddeen is a prominent SDPI worker who had contested in the Panchayat elections but lost. It is said that he is a familiar face in the Vengad area. There have been voices from certain quarters stating that incidents like these should not be used to target any particular community. It is true that individuals with such behavior exist in all communities.

However, there is often a common aspect in many of these incidents: the perpetrators belong to a certain community, while the victims belong to another community. In the movie “Kerala Story,” a hijab-clad woman can be seen convincing her friend that wearing a hijab protects her from sexual assault. Do we ever hear about a woman wearing a hijab being subjected to sexual harassment? Is it by chance or deliberate? When the perpetrator is always from a certain community and the victim is always from another community, the incident is already communalized, isn't it?
