Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader, was killed four days ago by Israeli forces. As the mastermind behind the October 7th carnage that claimed 1,200 innocent lives in Israel, his death must have brought relief to many. The horrific videos of the attack still haunt us, and any civilized society would be grateful to be rid of such a terrible human being.

It must therefore come as a shock that a “Mayyath Niskaram” (funeral prayer/death prayer) was organized for this man in Kerala a couple of days ago.

Let’s remember that no such prayer was organized even in Islamic countries for this man. But it happened in the most “literate,” “educated,” and “secular” Kerala.

Who organized the prayer?

The prayer was organized by the Student’s Islamic Organization (SIO), the youth wing of Jamat-e-Islami.

SIO shared photos of the event on their social media page. Samad Kunnakav, assistant secretary of Jamat-e-Islami Kerala, led the prayer.

Should we be surprised?

Honestly, there’s no reason to be. After all, last year, former Hamas chief Khaled Mashal addressed a rally in Malappuram, Kerala, via live video conference.

I think it's time for us to make peace with the fact that no matter what we do, for some of our fellow citizens, their faith and establishing their faith worldwide will always be the first priority.
